A Whirlpool dishwasher that leaves water after the cycle does not automatically need a drain pump. The height and location of the remaining water give useful clues: a shallow pool around the filter often points to a partial restriction, while water rising towards the door or a pump that hums without moving water can indicate a more severe blockage or a jammed component. Begin only after switching the dishwasher off at the circuit breaker and closing its under-sink water valve. Remove standing water with a cup or hand pump, then clean only the removable filter and visible sump area described in the model’s manual. The external drainage path matters just as much: a crushed hose, missing high loop, blocked air gap, clogged sink tailpiece or an unremoved garbage-disposal knockout plug can stop water or send it back into the tub. Use no chemical drain opener and do not insert sharp tools into the hose or pump. After reassembly, a short rinse test can confirm whether flow has returned. Repeated breaker trips, burning smells, leaks, grinding, an inaccessible obstruction or no pump response are service conditions, not reasons to open electrical panels at home.

Checks in the right order

  1. Isolate power and water

    Switch the dishwasher off at its circuit breaker rather than relying on the control panel. Confirm that its lights are off, then close the under-sink supply valve.

  2. Remove standing water safely

    Place towels in front, bail the tub with a cup and use a hand pump or baster for the shallow sump. Wear gloves because food debris or broken glass may be hidden.

  3. Clean the removable filter

    Follow the exact model manual to remove the upper and lower filter pieces. Rinse with warm water and a soft brush, inspect only the visible sump, then seat and lock every filter component correctly.

  4. Inspect the external drain route

    Check under the sink for a kinked or crushed hose, confirm the required high loop or clean air gap, and inspect the sink or disposal connection. After a new disposal installation, verify that its dishwasher-inlet knockout was removed.

  5. Reassemble and run a short test

    Secure filters and accessible connections, open the supply valve and restore the breaker. Run a short rinse, listen for normal draining and check the tub, hose connection and air gap for water.

Stop and get qualified help when

  • Stop and arrange qualified service for burning smells, damaged wiring, repeated breaker trips, active leaks, grinding, an unclear error code or any repair that requires opening a hard-wired panel or the drain pump.
  • If cleaning the removable filter and correcting the visible drain route does not restore flow, do not keep cycling the dishwasher with standing water; Whirlpool recommends targeted service.
