A sudden harsh sound, stalled burr or motor strain on BES878 and SES878 calls for an immediate stop. Empty the hopper and inspect the removable upper-burr area dry; never keep pulsing through a hard obstruction.

This page is for abnormal mechanical noise or a grinder that slows and stops, not a normal change in grind pitch as the hopper empties. Small stones or hard debris can travel with beans, while compacted oily grounds can load the burrs. The user-safe boundary ends at the hopper, removable upper burr and brush-accessible outlet shown by Sage.

Follow the checks in order and change only one condition at a time. Run a short rinse or test after each action, so the result identifies the cause instead of hiding it. The procedures below stay within the cleaning, refitting and user-menu operations described by the manufacturer.

Models covered

Safety first

  • Unplug before opening the hopper area and keep the grinder dry. Never place fingers, metal tools or a vacuum nozzle against the lower burr, and do not run the motor with guards removed.

What the symptom may indicate

Hard foreign objectA sharp new clack or immediate lock after adding beans can indicate debris between the burrs. Repeated starts can score a burr or overload the drive.
Compacted oily groundsA gradual rise in noise and slower output can come from packed coffee around the burrs and outlet, especially with very oily beans or a fine setting.

Checks in the right order

  1. Stop at the first abnormal sound

Release the grind control immediately. Switch off and unplug rather than testing the noise several more times.

  2. Empty and unlock the hopper

Remove beans by hand from the unplugged machine, turn the empty hopper to unlock and lift it away. Do not reach into the lower burr.

  3. Lift the upper burr and inspect

Record its adjustment, use the handle to unlock the upper burr, and inspect the exposed dry chamber for a loose hard object. Remove only debris that lifts out freely.

  4. Brush, refit and test briefly

Brush dry residue from burrs and outlet, restore the recorded setting and locks, then test with a few inspected dry beans. Stop immediately if the noise returns.

Stop and get qualified help when

  • Do not restart if a hard object is wedged, a burr edge is chipped, the upper burr will not seat and lock, the motor smells hot, or the same harsh sound returns during the small test.

Next step

Repair, replace a part, or arrange a diagnosis?

Use the checks and stop conditions above to choose the least costly safe next step. A symptom alone never proves that the appliance has failed.

Resolve it without buying anything

Complete the 4 safe checks in order. If normal operation returns and no warning sign remains, no replacement is indicated.

Replace only the confirmed part

If the checks isolate a worn or blocked component, match its complete reference to the exact appliance model before ordering.

This guide does not identify a replacement part. Do not order a generic component from the symptom alone.

Arrange a diagnosis before replacing the appliance

Stop at any warning sign listed above. A qualified diagnosis should confirm that repair is unsafe, unavailable or uneconomical before an appliance replacement is considered.
