Dyson brush bar not spinning: safe checks before a repair

Hair, thread and compacted debris commonly stop a Dyson brush bar. Isolate the cleaner head, clear only the accessible parts and confirm the exact head design before considering a replacement.

Manufacturer-confirmed fit

A brush bar that stops while the vacuum still produces suction points to the cleaner head rather than the main airflow system. Hair can wind tightly around the bar, while fibres and grit collect beside the end cap or inside the head opening. Dyson uses several cleaner-head designs, so the release method and removable components vary between V8, V10 and V11 machines. Work with the vacuum switched off and disconnected, then use the instructions for the exact head rather than forcing a lock or fastener. Filter replacement is kept separate: a new filter is not a credible fix when suction remains normal and only the powered brush has stopped.

What the symptom may indicate

Checks in the right order

  1. Disconnect the cleaner head

    Release the trigger, disconnect the charger and remove the cleaner head from the wand. Place it upside down on a stable, well-lit surface.

  2. Inspect the roller and neck

    Look along the full brush bar, around both ends and inside the head neck. Gently pull away loose hair and fibres without touching or levering the electrical contacts.

  3. Use the exact end-cap method

    Identify the cleaner-head model and follow its Dyson instructions. If its brush bar is designed to come out, unlock the end cap, lift out the bar and clear the accessible housing.

  4. Secure and test the head

    Refit the brush bar and close the end cap completely before reconnecting the head. Test briefly and stop immediately if the bar catches, grinds or remains stationary.

Stop and get qualified help when

  • Do not force an end cap that will not release. Stop for a cracked or bent bar, damaged housing, wet contacts, burnt pins, grinding noise or an electrical smell.
  • If the clean brush bar turns freely by hand but still does not run when securely fitted, use Dyson’s exact-machine diagnostic rather than opening the motorised head.
