Dyson losing suction or pulsing: what to check first

A Dyson that pulses or suddenly loses suction usually has restricted airflow, a blockage or a filter that needs attention. These checks help locate the cause before you consider replacing a part.

Pulsing is a protective response when too little air can pass through the machine. Start with the bin and accessible airways rather than assuming the motor has failed. Removing the wand and cleaner head helps reveal whether the restriction sits in an attachment, the wand, the bin inlet or the main body. A clogged or incorrectly fitted filter can produce the same symptom. Dyson V10 and V11 filters are not interchangeable, so confirm the machine name and serial family before choosing a replacement. Wash only the approved washable filter and refit it only when completely dry.

What the symptom may indicate

Restricted airflowA full bin, clogged washable filter or blockage in the wand, inlet or cleaner-head neck can make the motor pulse to protect itself.
Weak pickup without obvious pulsingWhen performance drops mainly with one attachment, inspect that attachment and its connection first. If every configuration is affected, continue through the complete airflow path and filter checks.

Checks in the right order

  1. Empty and isolate

    Switch off, disconnect from the charger and empty the clear bin before the MAX line. Keep the trigger released during every check.

  2. Check every airway

    Remove wand and cleaner head. Inspect the bin inlet, wand, head neck and accessible airways for debris, taking care around sharp objects.

  3. Wash and fully dry the filter

    Follow the exact-model guide, rinse the washable filter with cold water only and leave it to dry completely for at least 24 hours. Refit only when touch dry.

  4. Reassemble and test

    Refit the completely dry filter, bin, wand and cleaner head until every connection is secure. Test briefly in normal power mode and check whether suction is steady again.

Stop and get qualified help when

  • Stop if you find heat damage, a burning smell, liquid, damaged contacts or a blockage that cannot be reached without opening the motor body.
  • If pulsing continues with clear airways and a clean, fully dry filter, use Dyson's exact-model diagnostic instead of opening the motor body.
