iRobot states that Roomba should return when Home is requested, but docking depends on knowing its location and seeing a powered, correctly placed dock. Picking the robot up during a job can break that position context. Other docks nearby, obstacles, reflective or dark objects and dirty infrared windows can interfere with the final approach. This is a navigation and environment diagnosis, distinct from a charging failure after the robot has already docked. Begin by restoring dock power and clearance, place a moved robot within 1.8 metres in front of the dock, then watch the approach without carrying or pushing it.

Checks in the right order

  1. Restore dock power

    Push the line cord firmly into the dock and wall outlet. A dock light that appears for about four seconds and then turns off can be normal power-saving behaviour.

  2. Clear the docking zone

    Use the model’s clearance dimensions, remove objects in front and at the sides, keep other docks more than 2.5 metres away and place the dock against a stable wall on level flooring.

  3. Clean the infrared windows

    Unplug the dock and wipe its infrared window and the robot’s corresponding sensor areas with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Remove any protective shipping film from a new dock.

  4. Test from the official distance

    Place a robot that was moved within 6 feet or 1.8 metres directly in front of the dock, press Home or request Return to Home Base in the app and let it approach without assistance.

Stop and get qualified help when

  • Stop if the dock or cable is damaged, hot or wet, the robot repeatedly collides at speed, a wheel cannot turn or docking still fails in a clear test area; contact iRobot support.
